How BGRemoveX works

BGRemoveX removes image backgrounds inside your web browser. Here is each step, and what to do when a cutout needs a little help.

1. Open an image

Choose a photo with Open image (or Choose photo on a phone), drop it onto the page, or paste it with Ctrl+V (⌘+V on a Mac). BGRemoveX accepts JPG, PNG and WebP images up to 20 MB and 24 megapixels, one image at a time.

2. Choose the subject

Tell BGRemoveX what the photo shows. Each option uses a different removal route, so if one result is not right, another may be.

3. Remove the background

Press Remove Background. A progress bar shows each stage. The first time a removal route is used, your browser downloads the files it needs, so the first run takes longer than later ones. Large photos can take a few minutes on slower devices.

4. Check the result

On a computer, the original and the result sit side by side and zoom and pan together, with an optional magnifier for close inspection. On a phone, switch between Original, Result and Compare, pinch or double-tap to zoom, and use the lens to inspect edges.

5. Fix anything that is wrong

Smart Select

Smart Select lets you say exactly what to keep or remove. Outline an area with the Pen (place points, then close the path) or the Lasso (draw freehand), or paint with the Brush. You can also run the background remover only inside your selection. Smart Select works before or after Remove Background, and your corrections are kept if you run the removal again.

Refine

Refine is for edges and small areas. Use the Keep and Remove brushes, preview the cutout, an overlay or the mask, then finish the edge with Feather and Contract / Expand.

6. Download a PNG

Choose a background for the file: Transparent, White, Black or a custom colour. Then press Download PNG. The file is named after your original image.

Where the work happens

The image you open is read by your browser and processed on your device. BGRemoveX has no account system and no server-side storage for images. To run, your browser downloads the app and its background-removal model files from bgremovex.com and may keep them in its cache. More detail is on the privacy page.
